Ilana Eliya's artistry entwines old traditions from the mountains of Kurdistan and local, Israeli traditions. Eliya's intricate identity, her deep bonds to the kurd tradition kept by her father, the cantor, and her equally strong ties to the Hebrew language and to contemporery Hebrew poetry created an extraordinary echo in her musical - vocal presence. It rendered Eliya's unique, lucid, piersing voice a rare power of exspression.

Ilana sings in Kurdish, Hebrew and Arabic. She performs in Ethnic, Israeli and Jewish festivals around the world. Perfomed in England, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the U.S. and more.

Collaborated with numerous artists : Mark Kopitman, a classical modern music composer,The Yellow Submarin Jazz Ensamble, Avi Balleli and The Revenge Of The Tractor, and more.

Ilana Eliya is a unique voice. Born in Israel, of Kurdish descent, Eliya feeds off both her own extensive cultural heritage as well as the rich tapestry of ethnic sounds, smells and spirits emanating from the Middle East.

Fueled by her cultural and familial roots – her father was a cantor who performed an extensive range of religious Jewish material as well as putting together a priceless collection of songs from the rural areas of Kurdistan – Eliya stormed onto the Israeli and, subsequently, the world scene with a rare gift.

It is said that a true artist must have something to say, in addition to mastering the technical intricacies of his or her instrument. Ilana Eliya is a vocalist and storyteller par excellance. Whether singing songs from the classical Arabic songbook or performing multicultural and cross-cultural material from Andalusia Eliya takes her audiences on an enchanted voyage through the mysteries of the cultures she addresses.
Since her first recording, Jabalyio released in 1993, Eliya has performed all over the world with an oeuvre that continues to expand and cover ever-increasing musical and ethnic territory. Audiences in the United States, Europe and Israel have been introduced not only to relatively unknown Kurdish works, but also to classical Arabic pieces originally performed by legendary Egyptian singer Oum Koulthum and a wide range of religious and secular songs from the Ladino, Andalusian, Moroccan and Spanish cultures.
But, above all, it is Eliya’s vocal prowess that reaches out to her audiences across the globe. It is a mark of her skill as a raconteur, and ability to communicate her artistic message, that listeners are able to appreciate the musical tales she relates in her concerts and albums, despite not understanding the language of the lyrics. Her delivery combines a highly emotive approach with an intensity and power of expression that conveys high emotion and myriad colors.
Jabaliyo saw Eliya join forces with four exceptional instrumentalists – Moroccan-born multi-instrumentalist (string instruments - oud, saz and jimbush) composer and arranger Armand Sabach, cellist Rali Margalit, Yugoslav-born woodwind specialist Tibi Golan and percussionist Oren Fried. A subsequent self-titled release, completed in 1997, finds Eliya delving into all her roots, combining biblical material with traditional Kurdish music.

A subsequent self-titled release, completed in 1997, finds Eliya delving into all her roots, combining biblical material with traditional Kurdish music.

It is not by chance that all the members of the Jabaliyo Ensemble have imbibed influences from a wide cross-section of cultural sources, from Middle Eastern to European classical, and from flamenco to jazz. It is this ability to seamlessly accommodate and incorporate rhythms and textures from around the world that
enriches Eliya’s output and interpretations.
Eliya’s repertoire includes plaintive works of unrequited love and longing, laments, lullabies, religious and secular compositions, and songs that relate simple tales of rural life in the mountains of Kurdistan. She conveys her message uncomplicatedly and with rare honesty and frankness. She has always proudly and steadfastly followed her own path, despite pressures to adhere to “a more socially acceptable” philosophy. She also supports the teaching of eastern musical traditions in schools, along with western music, as a means of exposing children to the wonders and riches of both worlds, and of creating a new powerful synergy.

Living in Jerusalem, where so many western and eastern societies have left – and still leave – legacies to their heritage, places Eliya at the epicenter of some of the world’s richest and oldest cultures. For Eliya, her music is an ongoing work-in-progress that reaches out to all people regardless of their ethnic, social or religious backgrounds.

Seeing Eliya perform and listening to her records is an experience that leaves an indelible impression and opens up new vistas and possibilities for all. She has a precious talent to embrace and communicate a world of music to the whole world.</p><p></p>

He hasn't been back to Kurdistan for over 60 years. He speaks perfect Kurdish and recalls their journey to Israel and how his sister (miruat) was taken by force from them in Badinan when they were about to leave for Israel. Sarê is an Israeli Kurdish Jew from Koya in Kurdistan. She now lives in the village of Shtula in Israel. Sarê left Kurdistan for Israel 47 years ago and has been living in Israel since. In this video Sarê sings a Kurdish folk song with a distinctive Koya accent and her contemporaries in Koya might recognise her if they are still alive.
________________________________________
In the last ten years or so two scholars, Geoffrey Khan and Hezy Mutzafi, have devoted almost their entire academic energy to the study of individual Christian and Jewish Neo-Aramaic dialects that are not only on the verge of disappearance, but are also the least known. Their efforts have resulted in fine monographs that are thorough, in-depth, and comprehensive: G. Khan, A Grammar of Neo-Aramaic: The Dialect of the Jews of Arbel (Leiden, 1999), The Neo-Aramaic Dialect of Qaraqosh (Leiden, 2002), and The Jewish Neo-Aramaic Dialect of Sulemaniyya and Halabja (Leiden, 2004). This volume by Mutzafi follows fine articles on grammatical aspects of various dialects (e.g., &quot;Barzani Jewish Neo-Aramaic and its Dialects,&quot; Mediterranean Language Review 14 [2002]), which we hope might turn into monographs as well. The present monograph is based on a Hebrew doctoral dissertation (Tel-Aviv University, 2000), translated into English, with some necessary bibliographical updating, revision, and modification.

The introduction includes a brief history of Koy Sanjaq (KS) and its Jewish community. The town's name, &quot;Banner's Village,&quot; was given to it after an Ottoman army camped there (1623?). The present population is over 70,000, practically all Muslims, with only 142 (Neo-Aramaic-speaking) Chaldean Christians. The (Neo-Aramaic-speaking) Jewish community left for Israel in the early 1950s together with the rest of the Jews of Iraq. Mutzafi does not mention any numbers for the Jewish community, but according to Abraham Ben-Yaacob, Kurdistan Jewish Communities (Jerusalem, 1980), 101-3, there were seventy Jewish families there in 1948, 120 in 1884, and, according to the official 1930 census, 302 Aramaic-speaking Jews.

It seems that KS once had a thriving Jewish community, materially and spiritually, including Hakhamim (= Rabbis), who authored several books, such as Moshe and Abraham Hariri (Ben-Yaacob, 102-3). Mutzafi mentions a manuscript authored by a certain Yosef, son of Yahuda, brought by the community to Israel, which includes hymns, homilies, and prayers, as well as some &quot;archaic&quot; Neo-Aramaic translations, etc. A colophon in Hebrew from 1771 mentions the Turkish ruler: &quot;... our master, the mighty king Sultan Mustafa, may his kingdom prosper ...&quot; The occupations of the Jewish men were similar to those in other small towns in the area, i.e., weavers, tailors, goldsmiths, and merchants; in the past some had been farmers. Although relations with their Kurdish neighbors were not always peaceful, the local rulers gave them their patronage because of their contribution to the town's economy.
______________
After their emigration to Israel, like other Kurdish Jews in general, most Jews from KS preferred to stay together, return to agriculture, and live in cooperative villages in the Galilee (Shtula and Elqosh) and the Negev (Noga). This relative cohesion as a community in rural settings in somewhat isolated areas no doubt helped to preserve their dialect even after more than fifty years. Kurdistani Neo-Aramaic dialects in more central or urban Israeli centers were superseded by Hebrew much sooner or lost their unique features and became a part of the Israeli Neo-Aramaic koine.

The rest of the introduction deals with general linguistic issues, e.g., languages spoken by KS Jews, the registers of the Jewish dialect of KS (JKS), influence of other languages (primarily Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish, and Hebrew) on JKS. Men from KS were quite versed in Jewish religious literature, and their speech includes loanwords from classical Hebrew-Aramaic sources. JKS, as in Jewish languages in general, also has a cryptic register used when gentiles or children were present (e.g., &quot;money&quot; = tarpe &quot;leaves&quot; instead of the regular pare), a literary register for translations and adaptations (tawsir) of Biblical and other Jewish texts. A major influence from Kurdish is the ultimate accent of JKS (and other related dialects), whereas the majority of North Eastern Neo-Aramaic (NENA) dialects have a penultimate accent. Another typical feature common to dialects from east of the Greater Zab river, also due to Kurdish influence, is the general shift of interdentals *d and *t to l, as *'ida &gt; 'ila &quot;hand,&quot; *mata mala &quot;village, town.&quot; As in other towns where Neo-Aramaic was spoken by both Jews and Christians, JKS is different from Christian KS (CKS) grammatically and lexically, the latter usually being more conservative, e.g., &quot;a big house&quot; = JKS xa bela ruwwa, CKS xa beta raba; &quot;morning&quot; = JKS bqatta, CKS = xuskunta; &quot;Muslim&quot; (cryptic) = JKS goyim, CKS hampa.</p><p></p>
