Her parents were Kurdish from Zakho, a small town in southern Kurdistan. In 1952, like thousands of other Kurdish Jews, they felt obliged to leave the town; deportation has been the policy of all Iraqi regimes against Kurdish people. When they arrived in Israel, Ilana’s parents were allocated to one of Jerusalem’s camps called Catamonim. Ilana’s father, an amateur singer, took with him to Catamonim his collection of cassettes of Kurdish songs. While in the camp he was able to listen to songs broadcast by the Kurdish Radio Stations abroad. These songs he recorded to add to his collection. From being a small child Ilana had been encouraged by her mother to sing these Kurdish songs. Before her father, a police officer passed away, he left his collection of songs to her. Ilana’s mother played an important part in her musical life. “My mother took the financial task on herself: she went out to work as a second job an I was studying.” She studied classical guitar at the YMCA Center in Jerusalem. After completing her service at the army, Ilana worked for Yahav bank in Jerusalem. “This job is just a support to my musical life”, she added. Kurdish is not Ilana’s every day language, but she has memorized the songs in Kurdish: Farmane, Newroz, Felek, LoLo Sosan, DebeneBene - the songs of her motherland. She sings about the beauty of Kurdistan, about the oppression suffered by the Kurdish nation, about the misery of the individual lives of Kurdish people, and about love. She sings Az Kevukem(like a Partridge) this song became the “anthem” of the Jewish Kurdish in Israel, portraying a young man touring the village roofs trying to attract his beloved one…” As Ilana sings the audience is drawn into the lives of the people she is singing about. The majority of Ilana Eliya’s songs are Kurdish well known in Kurdistan. When she sings in concert, before each song Ilana explains in English it’s meaning. Jabalio (Mountain boy): “is an ensemble built around the singer Ilana Eliya, with the purpose of performing interpretations of Kurdish songs along with other middle-eastern music; some of the songs are ancient and some are contemporary protest songs, narrating the death and destruction inflicted upon Kurdistan for several years now by the Iraqis. The ensemble members come from rich and varied musical backgrounds, and musical arrangement reflect a merging of oriental folkloristic material and western classical influences.” “Ilans’s first CD, which was warmly received by the Israeli media, went-out in 1993.
